Experimental Studies of Targets and Collimators for High Intensity Beams*
The ever-increasing demand for high power accelerators requires high-performance materials that can safely intercept the proton beam either as accelerator targets or collimators. To satisfy the requirements of these multiMW level machines the envelope of the current knowledge regarding material behavior and endurance for both short and long exposure needs to be extended. For collimating structu...
متن کاملGeneration of neutral atomic beams utilizing photodetachment by high power diode laser stacks.
We demonstrate the use of high power diode laser stacks to photodetach fast hydrogen and carbon anions and produce ground term neutral atomic beams. We achieve photodetachment efficiencies of ∼7.4% for H(-) at a beam energy of 10 keV and ∼3.7% for C(-) at 28 keV. The diode laser systems used here operate at 975 nm and 808 nm, respectively, and provide high continuous power levels of up to 2 kW,...
متن کاملMerged neutral beams
Correspondence: [email protected] Institute for Chemical Sciences and Engineering, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland Abstract A detailed description of a merged beam apparatus for the study of low energy molecular scattering is given. This review is intended to guide any scientist who plans to construct a similar experiment, and to provide som...
متن کاملBeam-shaping optics delivers high-power beams
The development of laser diodes that deliver more than 10 W of output has changed the picture of the laser market. High-power devices now offer many advantages over conventional lasers of similar power levels, such as carbon dioxide or lamp-pumped Nd:YAG lasers. Their high efficiency (>30% wall-plug efficiency) promotes compact size as well as simplicity in power supply and cooling, which make ...
متن کاملSlip-stacking Dynamics for High-power Proton Beams at Fermilab
iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I will forever be indebted to my Indiana University doctoral advisor, Shyh-Yuan Lee, who believed in me and provided a foundational role in my accelerator physics education. His dedication, enthusiasm, and insight have made this work possible. I know the entire field of accelerator physics has felt the impact of his life's work and that all of us wish him the best of retirem...
